Bloxes

Beginning the blox room

This structure is made of Bloxes, what are bloxes I here you ask?
"Bloxes are building blocks made of interlocking pieces of corrugated cardboard, folded together. Their unique shape and structure make them exceptionally strong and lightweight—you could build yourself a platform to stand on, and then pick it up and move it wherever you need to."
I am not promoting or endorsing these different products, they are just some examples of ways to do things with cardboard. There are many ways that do not need anything more than a slot cut into it and joined to another box.

Makedo

Makedo is a system which allows you to join all sorts of things together, including cardboard whoopee! I will try to get hold of some to try out for the Carnival of Creativeness.
If you look at Makedo's website gallery of structures, there are loads more ideas to see.

Imaginary City

If you want have a go at building your own city you can visit the Tate Gallery website and have a go on their My Imaginary City game. I am sure you can do better than my effort.

Joanna Langford is a New Zealand artist and her work is worth looking at to get a view of how someone thinks about imaginary cities. She also has work on the plinths by Te Papa at the moment so you can have a look at her work there and search the internet for other images.

Cardboard Animation

Another great use of cardboard this time from Sjors Vervoort. If we have time at Capital E during the two weeks we will have a go at animating parts of our city.

Laser Cut Cardboard

cardboard into cubes

This work by Jared Tarbell, shows laser cut cardboard, which is then made into cubes and then can be turned into what ever you want.

Cardboard Slots

This shows how slots can be used to join pieces of cardboard together to make complex shapes.

Lets Play City

Lets Play City is part of Capital E’s Carnival of Creativeness a two-week extravaganza of creating for young people. It starts on the 10 April and runs through to Saturday the 21 April, from 10.00 am - 4.00 pm but closed on Sundays.
Using only cardboard and a large dollop of imagination children taking part will build a city, which will express their ideas of what a city can be.
This blog will show examples of the work produced over the two weeks and a place to get some ideas and starting points.

Cardboard

Cardboard Institutue of Technology

Cardboard has been chosen as it is versatile, plentiful, reusable and recyclable. There are a number of different ways of joining it together, from the old school methods of tape, staples and glue to more recent methods of reusable fixings. I will post about those later. Another simple way is to cut slots in the cardboard and fix it that way, this is free and can be, if designed well, very strong.
